Providing Post COVID-19 Care

A free mobile medical clinic in Southwestern Virginia, the Health Wagon is serving record numbers of patients due to COVID-19.

A free mobile medical clinic in Southwestern Virginia, the Health Wagon, is caring for the uninsured in a region that has experienced some of the highest COVID-19 infection rates in the nation. With 20-30% positivity rates in some instances, the clinic is implementing a three-pronged approach to serving the region's most vulnerable: mass testing, treatment of those that test positive, and management of lingering symptoms after recovery through specialized 'post COVID-19 clinics' which include x-ray screenings and pulmonary function tests.

Steve Smith, a former police officer, was the first patient to use this specialty clinic following initial treatment and improvment from COVID-19 symptoms when he later developed profound respitory distress as a result of blood clots. “Steve Smith is a case close to my heart that I have been treating and following closely,” said Dr. Teresa Tyson, President & CEO and family nurse practitioner at the free clinic. “Post COVID-19 clinics are essential as patients can experience dire and emergent health issues through the recovery phase of this disease. The Health Wagon stands ready to serve vulnerable patients who are battling COVID-19 and post COVID-19 challenges.”
