Caring for Vulnerable Residents & Communities
Free and charitable clinics provide integrated care to uninsured and underinsured patients, including medical, dental, pharmacy, behavioral health, vision, and social determinants of health services. They serve as efficient and high-quality medical homes constituting an essential statewide safety net of care for Virginia's underserved. Since Medicaid expansion in 2019, 24 clinics have also become Medicaid providers, caring for 26,018 Medicaid recipients in 2024.
Playing an Important Role in Preventative Care
Good health is the foundation for stability, whether it's steady employment, success in school, or maintaining the social connections that support mental wellbeing. Virginia's free and charitable clinics provide accessible, comprehensive, and high-quality preventive and chronic care, ensuring uninsured and underinsured individuals can remain healthy and active in their daily lives. By helping patients manage chronic conditions, access screenings, and receive timely interventions, clinics reduce unnecessary emergency room visits and avoidable hospital readmissions.
