Stories of Impact: Robert's

Robert works hard but struggles to afford his healthcare. The clinic makes sure he never goes without.

When Robert walked into his local free clinic 15 years ago due to a diabetes diagnosis, he wasn't sure what to expect. What he received was holistic, patient-centered healthcare. Free and charitable clinics surround patients like Robert with the complete care and intervention they need, going beyond basic medical care and addressing the social and economic factors that may be impacting a patient's health. By treating patients beyond the exam room, clinics make a meaningful impact on people's lives and help them achieve better health outcomes. Indeed, patient-centered care is associated with higher rates of patient satisfaction as well as adherence to healthier lifestyle changes and treatment plans.

As a full-time mechanic, Robert works hard but still struggles to afford all his essential healthcare. The clinic makes sure he never goes without, from insulin and testing supplies to nutrition education to support after an eye injury that required expensive drops, he is able to get what he needs, when he needs it.Thousands of low-income Virginians rely on free and charitable clinics for a health home.

“The clinic staff are all so respectful and caring; they listen to what's going on with me and my health. All I can say is thanks to each and every one of you.”

He's one of thousands of low-income Virginians who rely on free and charitable clinics across the Commonwealth, not just for treatment, but for a true healthcare home. Because healthcare is about more than just medicine, it's about people.
